Acura TLX Performance

Style without substance is fun, but not for long. To survive, a car needs to offer as much of both as possible. The Acura TLX 2021 aims to do so with a solid base configuration and a Type S.

Base TLX is not just an ordinary car. Contrary to how most manufacturers approach new sports sedan designs, Acura starts with the necessary structure for the Type S, then returns to the base TLX, a decision Acura expects to see in the car’s basic performance.

Under the hood of the Acura TLX 2021, you’ll find a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of producing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The numbers represent a peak increase of 66 hp and 98 lb-ft from the previous TLX entry-level engine– in fact, the new turbo-four delivers 13 lb-ft more torque than the previous TLX V-6.

Type S, Acura will launch a new special Acura (not used with Honda) 3.0 liter single-turbo V-6. Since the Type S won’t launch until spring 2021, Acura remains unaware of the Type S power and torque output and performance metrics. We hope to learn more as we approach the full disclosure of Type S.

Acura’s fourth-generation SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system, optional in the base TLX and standard on the Type S, delivers 30 percent faster torque transfer to the rear axle, and 40 percent more total torque capacity. Up to 70 percent of engine torque can be sent to the rear wheels, and 100 percent of the torque sent backward can be directed to either side. On top of the rear bias power delivery, the rear axle is continuously overdriven at 2.9 percent for increased turn-in and cornering.

The electric power-steering system also got some changes for the TLX 2021. The rack-and-pinion electric-assist system has been gone, being replaced by belt-driven electric assist.

Not all of the performance improvements to the Acura TLX 2021 come in hardware. Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System (the marque name for its performance-setting control suite) now offers a user-programmable Individual mode in addition to the Comfort, Normal, Sport mode, and, on the Type S model, the familiar Sport + mode. Individual Mode isn’t just a first for TLX, it’s a first for Acura.

Acura TLX Handling and Chassis

Under the long, low hood of the new TLX sits another performance system that’s somewhat unusual in its class, even though it’s a staple of the old TL formula: double-wishbone suspension. Avoiding the previous McPherson TLX strut system supporting double wishbones not only improved suspension geometry throughout its entire range of motion but allowed the Acura designer to lower the hood and front fender, which was good for handling as well as design.

Like the NSX, the Acura TLX 2021 uses a brake-by-wire system. This electric servo braking system allows Acura to adjust the brake pedal style and feel based on the desired driving characteristics. For the Type S, Brembo’s improved four-piston front brake calipers and larger discs will help improve braking performance, while the electric servo braking system will be reset for the improved hardware and more sports-focused missions of the Type S.

Even in its basic form, the TLX comes with 18-inch wheels, with 19 inches available as an upgrade. A 255-section wide performance tire provides a 20 percent increase in grip over previous TLX wheel and tire arrangements. For the Type S, 20-inch wheels are standard– the 10-spoke unit is finished in Shark Gray. Light wheel options will also be available for the Type S with a Y-spoke design inspired by the NSX.

Acura TLX Equipment

With the overall dimensions increased with a wheelbase of 3.7 inches, a length of 2.9 inches, and a width of 2.2 inches, the new TLX looks bigger than the previous car. The end result is a more spacious cabin with more stuff. What kind of stuff? High tech type, mostly.

The headline of the interior equipment list is new three-chamber airbag technology which we will learn more about in the coming weeks; for now, it is best described as a “catching glove” style setup. Its purpose is to reduce the force on the occupant’s head, especially the torsional force, to increase survivability and reduce injury in frontal collisions.

Front and center of the cab is a 10.2-inch high-definition display paired with a touch panel mounted on the console, now with physical controls for volume, search, and power functions right on the side– no more looking away from the road to reach forward. to the dashboard. The touchpad itself is also upgraded, as is the control software. A brief test run of the infotainment system during our visit by car prior to its launch proved that the touchpad is easy and intuitive to use– although we’ll be giving the final judgment of its true efficacy and ease of use until we try to operate it while on the move.

Acura TLX Type S Colors

For those who tend to use cloud services in their cars, the Acura TLX 2021 also offers AcuraLink with 4G LTE and in-vehicle Wi-Fi.

Acura will offer an expanded color palette for the TLX 2021, including unique colors for the base model and the Type S. Phantom Violet Pearl is the new base TLX option, while the Type S will get a unique green-gold color called Tiger Eye Pearl. The Type S will also get the Apex Blue Pearl paint color previously only available on the A-Spec models.

Seven interior color options will be available for the TLX range, including Ebony, Espresso, Graystone and Parchment for the standard car. The S-type model will choose Ebony or red leather, both with black Ultrasuede inserts, while a special Light Orchid interior skin tone will also be available.

All TLX models will feature a new ambient lighting system, which can be synchronized with the driving mode, or selected separately from a list of 24 different schemes based on iconic driving destinations such as Suzuka or the Pacific Coast.

There will be several trim and gear packages available, including the TLX Advance, TLX A-Spec, and TLX Type S. Full details, pricing, and equipment specifications are expected to roll out soon.
